Fashion Lesson: Steampunk

The History

Steampunk was the sub-genre of science fiction during the 19th Century. It revolved mainly around steam-powered machinery that was arising in the Western Civilization. During this time period, steam power was popular and widely used in notable, scientific romance literary works--such as those by H. G. Wells, Mary Shelley, and Jules Verne. Steampunk can be found in modern day works from Philip Pullman and China Mieville.

The steampunk genre featured elements of fantasy, horror, and historical fiction that made it a hybrid genre, or cross-genre. Steampunk literature involved futuristic inventions, fictional machines, and futuristic architectural style and art, creating a post-apocalyptic future.

Steampunk Fashion

Steampunk fashion was inspired by the Victorian Era. The use of gowns, petticoats, corsets, vests, suits, top hats, and military garments are typically seen in this style. Technological pieces--goggles, ray guns, timepieces, machinery--are used to accent these garments. Modern pieces like cell phones and music players are modified to look Victorian-made.

Get the Look

Get the steampunk look by pairing a blouse with a high-low skirt and combat boots. Go for a corset, waist belt if you're uncomfortable with wearing a corset. Stick to gold and leather pieces of jewelry, like this Steampunk-inspired key necklace, cutout cuff, leather cuff with chevron pieces, and studded cuff. Sport an industrial-inspired cross bag and circle glasses to complete the look.

Have fun with this wild style!

Whether you're catching the latest flick at the theater, or munching on popcorn in your home theater, keep warm in the cold with a cute sweatshirt, colored jeans, and laced boots. Complete the look with minimum jewelry pieces (you do not want to disrupt the movie). Apply some mousse to your hair, brush your gorgeous locks, and you are set for a night out!

Back-To-School Party

After a successful week of school, perhaps it's time for you and a few buds to whine down and have a little get together. Invited friends to a small party with music and snacks. Be a fabulous hostess in a sheer blouse, frilled skirt, and black pumps. Then complete the look with a long, pendant necklace. Bonus points if your top has a studded collar!

University Visit

Weekend Looks: University Tour
Sweatshirt, Jacket, Jeans, Boots, Scarf
The weekend provides time to take a trip to your choice school. Schedule a school tour, and dress appropriately. Try a sweatshirt with jeans and a leather jacket. Complete the look with a scarf of beanie if the weather is chilly. Considered you will be doing some walking, switch out your heels for tennis shoes or boots.

Well, that's all for now loves! Have a great weekend!
